Giver Mural

I got the chance to work with the awesome people at Sinking Ship Entertainment to do a mural as part of a playground built in west Hamilton. It was part of a show being filmed for TVO kids called 'Giver'. I only had a day and a half to paint it, but a lot of the local kids came out to help, and made things a lot smoother. It won't air until next year, but the playground is all done and ready!

A bunch of stuff...

Longgggg time, no post. I've been busy with some pretty big changes recently and kind of left blogging behind. I have a bunch of projects on the go at the moment, and I didn't want to post them until I had proper scans/photos of the projects, but sometimes that can't happen. So...forgive the bad photo quality of some of these, but I didn't want to leave the blog empty any longer! So, here is a bunch of random photos of things I've worked on since my last posting!

First, this is a painting commission I did wayyyyy back in December. It was for a young lady that is thinking about going into school for environmental conservation (I don't know that name of the actual course...but you get the idea). The theme (which is usually pretty obvious in my work) is mutual respect between man and natural. Fictional cryptozoological creatures encountering humans for the first. Mostly an excuse to paint winged/horned polar bears fighting.

I was also invited to paint one of TSURT's big vinyl bunnies. This was a lot of fun, and as soon as I know when and where the show is going to be I'll post it up as well. I actually just found out that both Munk One and Jordan Buckley (Everytime I Die) have painted some for the show, so it should be good!

I got to play with some spraypaint on a window mural at Currys. I was originally going to use this image for a painting that will be at Sleeping Giant Gallery this summer, but used it for this instead. Acrylic and spraypaint on a big piece of acetate. The sky kind of glows when the light comes through it!

I don't usually work with spraypaint, and with the mural above I went back in and painted some acrylic over it. However, I was recently asked to paint a mural on the garage door at the Earls Court Gallery, and had to work entirely with spraypaint, which was challenging but pretty fun. A fun little water Genie-guy-dude-thing coming out of a diving helmet. They also wrote about it in the spec, check out the article HERE!

I also just started working at cottage 13 as the new counter boy, soon to be apprentice. I am getting a halfsleeve done up soon by the very talented Evan Dowdell over at Time Will Tell Tattoo soon, check his work out! This is a painting I recently finished that Evan will be using as loose reference for the tattoo. Again...a pretty terrible photo of it, but I will get it scanned soon so I can get some prints made!

And fiiiinally...a little sneak peak at a painting I'm working on... More soon! (...much sooner than the last time!)

Hey there, I have my stuff posted up on a site called 'Oculoid'. Here is the idea behind the site;

Oculoid is my personal online space to share and discuss information about a subject I love very much. What is that subject? Why, art of course! Art is all around us, and we are exposed to it every day. Art is found in everything from the movies we watch, video games we play, books and magazines we read, posters and billboards we see, to just about anything you can buy in a store. If you stop and think about it, art went into almost everything of what you see around you right this second!

My intent with Oculoid is to provide daily inspiration to the vast network of designers and artists that surf the net. Check in with Oculoid every day for the best the art world has to offer.

February, January's colder twin...

First off, the show at the Mulberry has come to an end, but if you are still interested in the prints, they are now available up on my store. I am also still selling prints at Cottage 13, some paintings, shirts and prints at #220, and shirts and prints at Mixed Media. I am going to put up the print series at Jimmy Gringos in Westdale.

Also, if you haven't checked out Bro Mondes' blog, I suggest you do. The lovechild of Julian Foreman, Matt McPeak and Mike Malysewich, it is a weekly online magazine focused on fashion, style and culture for men. They recently covered the Art Crawl, and had Jay Perry taking some photos along the way. I got a chance to talk with the guys for a bit during the crawl, this is the posting HERE. My studio will be open for the February Art crawl, and I will also be taking part in the first ever 'Battle of the Brushes'. Here is the event info for that!

Speaking of Mr. Perry, he has a show opening up at #220 that sounded pretty interesting. He travelled to Haiti with The Joy and Hope of Haiti charity group as well as the Starfish Kids organization. The photos were all about the Haitian children and the happiness they bring to the world. There's too much talk about the poverty taking over Haiti and not enough about the happiness that the Haitian people spread. Heres the event information.

That is all for now, I have a few new paintings and projects that I can't wait to post, but they aren't 100% done yet.

Burroughs #2 (Mulberry Street Art Show Pieces)

Here's the work that I will have up at the Mulberry Art Show with Lester Coloma. The work goes up today, and the opening is on friday. I am going to have prints of these pieces for sale as well, so come by and check out the show!

This show took me a lot longer than I was expecting it to. The 5 pieces all connect to make a massive cityscape. I basically took aspects of Hamilton architecture and the aesthetics of different parts of town, drew the buildings in isometrics, then turned them all into silkscreens and painted them on wood panels. The paintings aligned properly make a piece thats 18" x 108". Anyway, I hope some of you can check these out in person!

This piece is much bigger than I normally work (4'x4'), but it allowed me to work in more textures without them overwhelming the composition. (hopefully somewhere that isn't going to charge a lot too!)This is actually the first piece I completed working at the studio. I used the same steps taken when I did the 'Burroughs #1' piece. I will be doing 18" x 24" hand silkscreened posters shortly, and I will be posting them up on here as soon as they're done as well as selling them from the studio as well as online.

40 Sons is a Hamilton based metal/rock band. I am illsutrating a new shirt for them. I was given a lot of freedom, so I tried to have fun with the characters and name. Loooooong time no post. I started working in a studio at the Hotel Hamilton on James street...and the moved coupled with working hard at the studio, as well as at my job to pay for the studio, has left me with no updates in the last few months. I am also without a scanner to document my large work, so I will just post some crappy versions for now until I can get a better version up. The studio is great so far, lots of people come through for the crawls as well as special events (such as Doors Open Hamilton'). Currently I am working to get a few new pieces done for the crawls, as well as a few shows coming up in August, namely the Skate Deck show at Loose Canon Gallery. I already finished a couple decks, which are currently for sale as well. Anyway, heres the studio...

This is the finished painting I did as a commission. I made silkscreen prints of this piece, and even though it may look similar to some of my older stuff, I actually used a very different approach with this piece that (I think) will allow me to develop the textures I am trying to get with my newer work. Anyway, either this piece is going to be a hybrid from my old work to my new work...or just an experimental division.

The blogger quoted below found a post on Craigslist that explains the insanity of doing spec work better than anything I can say. The original author is unknown, but beautifully sets out the argument regarding why artists need to stop accepting work in exchange for "experience" and "exposure". Sadly, Craigslist is not the only source of such dubious "opportunities". The web link is at the bottom if you want to read all the follow-up comments to the blog post. Thank you Rebecca. And all you artists out there print this off and read it if ever you are tempted to work on spec.

I’m a self-employed graphic designer. In the old days, when I was greener than a leprechaun’s testicles, nothing would make me consider suicide quicker than a potential client who was, in fact, just some deluded jackass. The hook was usually, “If you do this job cheap, I’ve loads more work for you!” and I bought that line more times than anyone with an ounce of sense ought to have.

This morning, the following was posted on CraigsList. It’s been doing the rounds on design boards and blogs in a big community whoop because it captures and excoriates so perfectly the ignorance and arrogance inflicted on designers by design morons.

The post was quickly flagged and removed (i.e. censored) by CraigsList users, but not before it became the gift that keeps on giving. Who was that masked crusader? Designers everywhere owe him a hot coffee and a big hug:

Every day, there are more and more Craiglist posts seeking “artists” for everything from auto graphics to comic books to corporate logo designs. More people are finding themselves in need of some form of illustrative service.

But what they’re NOT doing, unfortunately, is realizing how rare someone with these particular talents can be.

To those who are “seeking artists”, let me ask you; How many people do you know, personally, with the talent and skill to perform the services you need? A dozen? Five? One? …none?

More than likely, you don’t know any. Otherwise, you wouldn’t be posting on Craigslist to find them.

And this is not really a surprise.

In this country, there are almost twice as many neurosurgeons as there are professional illustrators. There are eleven times as many certified mechanics. There are SEVENTY times as many people in the IT field.

So, given that they are less rare, and therefore less in demand, would it make sense to ask your mechanic to work on your car for free? Would you look him in the eye, with a straight face, and tell him that his compensation would be the ability to have his work shown to others as you drive down the street?

Would you offer a neurosurgeon the “opportunity” to add your name to his resume as payment for removing that pesky tumor? (Maybe you could offer him “a few bucks” for “materials”. What a deal!)

Would you be able to seriously even CONSIDER offering your web hosting service the chance to have people see their work, by viewing your website, as their payment for hosting you?
If you answered “yes” to ANY of the above, you’re obviously insane. If you answered “no”, then kudos to you for living in the real world.

But then tell me… why would you think it is okay to live out the same, delusional, ridiculous fantasy when seeking someone whose abilities are even less in supply than these folks?

Graphic artists, illustrators, painters, etc., are skilled tradesmen. As such, to consider them as, or deal with them as, anything less than professionals fully deserving of your respect is both insulting and a bad reflection on you as a sane, reasonable person. In short, it makes you look like a twit.

A few things you need to know;
1. It is not a “great opportunity” for an artist to have his work seen on your car/’zine/website/bedroom wall, etc. It IS a “great opportunity” for YOU to have their work there.

2. It is not clever to seek a “student” or “beginner” in an attempt to get work for free. It’s ignorant and insulting. They may be “students”, but that does not mean they don’t deserve to be paid for their hard work. You were a “student” once, too. Would you have taken that job at McDonalds with no pay, because you were learning essential job skills for the real world? Yes, your proposition it JUST as stupid.

3. The chance to have their name on something that is going to be seen by other people, whether it’s one or one million, is NOT a valid enticement. Neither is the right to add that work to their “portfolio”. They get to do those things ANYWAY, after being paid as they should. It’s not compensation. It’s their right, and it’s a given.

4. Stop thinking that you’re giving them some great chance to work. Once they skip over your silly ad, as they should, the next ad is usually for someone who lives in the real world, and as such, will pay them. There are far more jobs needing these skills than there are people who possess these skills.

5. Students DO need “experience”. But they do NOT need to get it by giving their work away. In fact, this does not even offer them the experience they need. Anyone who will not/can not pay them is obviously the type of person or business they should be ashamed to have on their resume anyway. Do you think professional contractors list the “experience” they got while nailing down a loose step at their grandmother’s house when they were seventeen?
If you your company or gig was worth listing as desired experience, it would be able to pay for the services it received. The only experience they will get doing free work for you is a lesson learned in what kinds of scrubs they should not lower themselves to deal with.

6. (This one is FOR the artists out there, please pay attention.) Some will ask you to “submit work for consideration”. They may even be posing as some sort of “contest”. These are almost always scams. They will take the work submitted by many artists seeking to win the “contest”, or be “chosen” for the gig, and find what they like most. They will then usually have someone who works for them, or someone who works incredibly cheap because they have no originality or talent of their own, reproduce that same work, or even just make slight modifications to it, and claim it as their own. You will NOT be paid, you will NOT win the contest. The only people who win, here, are the underhanded folks who run these ads. This is speculative, or “spec”, work. It’s risky at best, and a complete scam at worst. I urge you to avoid it, completely. For more information on this subject, please visit www.no-spec.com.
So to artists/designers/illustrators looking for work, do everyone a favor, ESPECIALLY yourselves, and avoid people who do not intend to pay you. Whether they are “spec” gigs, or just some guy who wants a free mural on his living room walls. They need you. You do NOT need them.

And for those who are looking for someone to do work for free… please wake up and join the real world. The only thing you’re accomplishing is to insult those with the skills you need. Get a clue.

A couple projects...

These are a couple projects I've been working on lately. First, I submitted a piece to the 'New Tapestry' project put on by Kessels Kramer. The project is basically a recreation of the old Bayeux Tapestry, which depicted the major news events of 1066. The project is being called 'The New Tapestry', and it consists of illustrators from around the world, contributing black and white images depicting the major news events of today. (That summary was 100% stolen from Nimit's blog). I worked on week 4 (the end of January).

Secondly, I started working on a big commission for my Aussie friends Mike and Liz, this is the sketch for it. I'm going to try making a progress video of it.

I'll have a few new pieces to post soon as well!

I'm kind of re-using a drawing with this piece...but it is for a reason. I was commissioned to do a piece a while ago with the only requirement that it had a snake in it somewhere. I've done a couple snake pieces already, and had the Burnitdowns poster come up in the middle of this 'snake phase'. I have one more snake piece...then I think I'm going to have to move on... I'll have a bunch of new posts soon too! I just can't find my camera cord.

Cryptozoology (Nerd Rant)

So I have finally started to work on the Murray/Malavia playing cards...and have been collecting alot of weird references. Ever since I started work on the pieces for 'UnNatural' I have been finding some insane articles/ images. One thing I kept coming across while searching for reference was articles on Cryptozoology. This is a field that studies cyptids; legendary animals or species that are not proven to presently exist (things like Yeti, Loch Ness Monster, etc). I find these so interesting because for someone growing up with the world accesible through the internet, the world feels alot smaller than it actually is. It is possible that some of the creatures actually still exist, but are so remote that we have never come across them or properly recorded it. It is unlikely that they do, but it will be interesting to see what we find when we start combing the ocean in the next few years with manned subs. This was from an article in 'Popular Science' - "Now engineers want to unlock the rest of the sea with a new fleet of manned submersibles. And they don't have to go to the very bottom to do it. In fact, only about 2% of the seafloor lies below 20,000 feet, in deep, muddy trenches. If we extend our current reach just 5,000 feet -another mile- it will open about 98% of the world's oceans to scientific eyes."
These are just a couple of the things I've found that are blowing my nerdy mind!

First is a (theoretical) extinct snake called a Titanoboa - it was thought to be a 50-60 foot long mega snake that lived in south America. There are some (unproven) accounts of snakes this size still alive today.

There was also the Dunkleoteus...33ft long. It ate prehistoric sharks...

And also, the Giant ground sloth. Some people think it could still exist in remote parts of the rain forest.

Finally...an awesome picture of a sloth fighting a giant squid.

So my cousin Ty and the rest of The Burnitdowns are having a cd release show in Toronto on October 5th. These guys are awesome, and I have been doing alot of their album work/promotion for the last couple years. I love working on band promo, so it's awesome getting the chance to work on it every once and a while. I used one of my pieces from my UnNatural show for the new album "We're Not The Things We've Done" (which is pretty freaking good! Listen to it on their myspace here!)

Canon Skins

These are the skins I created for the canon iP100 printer. The old style teal coloured radio is actually upside down...the printer is able to be set up sitting on it's one side, so the image has to be upside down to make sense. They decided to go with 'Stereophonics' (the one that looks like an old boombox/keyboard). It was awesome working with they guys at canon, and I can't wait to get to see what the skin actually looks like. So, I liked the sabertooth/snake/sea serpent thing so much, i decided to try it again. I think I'm going to make this a pretty big piece, because the details will probably drive me nuts otherwise. OK, so I never did keep up with blogging, and I wasn't going to post things about the show, but I'm jealous of everyone else's posts...so I'm going to do a little sneak peak/explanation about our plan. So, Chris Brett and myself are having a show August 14th at Loose Canon Gallery. Our show is going to be called 'UnNatural'. Heres a little blurb we came up with...

UnNatural
How can we find the impetus to set any goals when the ultimate goal, the one thing we all want, is unreachable?
As a species, we strive to understand the world around us. We can understand the functions of the smallest cells, but our understanding of physics states that a bee cannot fly. However, what if we eventually knew the answers to all of Man’s questions? What would be our purpose? Our ultimate goal? These UnNatural, unexplainable creatures that we fabricate are a testament to Man’s unending search for understanding. Our ultimate, unreachable goal.

We are pretty excited about the show (well, I am, but Chris is easily excited, so he probably is too...) So, if you get the chance, come down and check out the show! We'll be recklessly promoting the show in August, so don't get mad if I end up flooding your inbox or solicit your house later.

So I haven't posted anything since the grad show. I've been pretty busy moving back home and setting up again. The summer already looks insanely busy, but thats good for me (I get bored fast). Some of the project I have lined up should keep me distracted for most of the summer, and my parents will make sure I'm busy building a house somewhere when I'm not. This is a shirt design I'm trying to make for my cousin's summer tour. I'm having trouble balancing the black and white...and I'm not happy with the placement of the band names right now....any thoughts?

So these are the last pieces for Interpretive class. They both deal with urban crowding, and the need for some 'breathing room'. Kind of weird pieces that encompass alot of techniques I've been playing with throughout the year. I dabbled in a bunch of approaches thoughout the year...which has been REALLY frustrating at times, but I learned alot...and will probably use some stuff when I get working on my show with Mr. Chris Brett in August

Im trying to decide how I should lay this piece out....It is going to say "Bandaid Solutions"...even though for some reason i put bandage twice... The first one has the bandage text built into the ladder. The second, both are on the buildings (which will be lights in the windows). If I were to clean up the first one a bit....would it be better? Or should I go the safe route and just go with the building text?

Nature Re-Defined

This is my second piece for Interpretive. My 'thesis' for the semester is to create 40s/50s style posters/advertisements selling inventions/creations that represent modern day issues. The 'inventions' attempt to fix problems that are actually irreparable. This poster deals with biological engineering. While I think there are definitely positive aspects to bio-engineering, there are also some ridiculous uses. This illustration is an insane exaggeration, but makes you think twice about the issue. The text (which you can't read in this version...and I am probably going to adjust) first describes how this 'new meat' eliminates the need for variety in meat since it contains all the benefits meat from 6 different animals. The disclaimer at the bottom notes that the animal can also carry every disease that the original animals carry. The other reason I am using a 40s/50s style approach to the posters is to satirize the optimistic views of those days in comparison to the sometimes scared/ un-optimistic sense that I get from culture today. I hope this makes some sense...it (kind of?) does to me...and if I question myself too much on it, I'll get no pretty paintings done... I know this piece is very Di Genova-ish (sorry Nick!)...but I think it fits my thesis really well.

This was the final project for Rick Sealock's class. I've never done caricatures before in a piece...so this was a stretch. I don't think I got either of them very well, but I learned a little bit about likenesses (...or lack of...). It's supposed to be Kenny vs Spenny as rock'em sock'em robots. The image is designed so it can fold in half, so the right side is actually the front page.

So this is the final "poster" or "ad" for the model. I was pretty happy with the results, I got alot of good advice from Thom Sevalrud (he suggested hinting at vertical lines running through the background robots). I also wanted to put the quote "Assimilate or Antiquate" in here somewhere, a little TNG...but I think it emphasizes my point with the piece...I might add it later. I have another poster due on wednesday...I'll be lucky to get it done, but Im having fun with this project, so I might be able to...
